Ohio Can Offer Buyers Help

By: Christopher Jensen

Here is how you can use the resources of the state of Ohio to help prevent odometer fraud or to take the action if you suspect you are a victim. If you have already purchased a vehicle and suspect odometer fraud, you can report your concern to the State Highway Patrol by calling 1-800-686-2587. But before buying, it is a good idea to check an Ohio title through the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles.

First, take down the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number, or VIN. It usually can be found on a metal tag on the steering column or a plate under the hood. It would also be on the title or registration papers. Then, call the Bureau of Motor Vehicles at (614) 752-7671 and ask for a privacy protection form. This will be mailed to you, and it must be filled out with an explanation of why you want the information. Return the form with a check for $2.

From the time the BMV receives the completed form, it should take about two days to get information back in the mail, according to Robert Posey, section chief in the title division. If the vehicle is from Ohio, the information will include previous owners and mileage. It might also be possible to use that information to call directory assistance and contact the previous owners about the vehicle's history and any problems. "For two bucks, it is a great investment. It is giving you information about your next purchase," Posey said.
